This article describes a new approach to conducting travel surveys using Google Location History (GLH) data. The researchers developed a method that allows them to create travel diaries for transportation demand analysis by analyzing the GLH data of smartphone users. Unlike previous methods that required the use of specific GPS tracking applications, this new methodology takes advantage of the widespread use and accuracy of GLH among smartphone users. The researchers improved upon an existing travel survey designer called Travel Activity Internet Survey Interface (TRAISI) to enable it to extract travel diaries from GLH data provided by survey respondents. To demonstrate the feasibility of this approach, the researchers conducted the Google Timeline Travel Survey (GTTS) in the Greater Toronto Area, Canada. The resulting dataset from the GTTS was found to be representative of the population and provided detailed and accurate insights into travel behaviors.
