Can neuron-glial networks trigger explosive synchronization?

The study explores “explosive synchronization” in networks, a sudden shift to synchronized oscillations. This phenomenon, akin to Kuramoto scenarios, occurs in various network types without specific oscillator dynamics. Focusing on multiplex networks, the research highlights how a sparse random layer with higher-order coupling triggers explosive synchronization, despite the other layer lacking phase transitions. Even with low-order coupling, the random layer induces synchronization, albeit with a narrower hysteresis interval and without explosive desynchronization. These findings have implications for understanding normal and pathological neural-glial network dynamics.
