Can We Predict Court Judgments Using Facts?

Original title: Fact-based Court Judgment Prediction

Authors: Shubham Kumar Nigam, Aniket Deroy

In their article, the researchers expand on their prior work on predicting court judgments using the ‘ILDC for CJPE: Indian Legal Documents Corpus.’ They delve into fact-based judgment prediction in Indian legal documents, introducing two variations: one focused on facts alone and another combining facts with lower court rulings. Seeking to enhance early-phase case outcome prediction, their study aims to aid legal professionals and the public. Despite implementing weightage schemes in their DELSumm algorithm, their results showed reduced performance compared to the original study. Interestingly, using only facts for judgment prediction with different transformer models yielded inferior results compared to the state-of-the-art outcomes reported previously.
